PMD is a disease of peripheral corneal thinning that is progressive over time. It occurs slowly over many years. Primarily, it causes severe deterioration in visual function.

PMD typically presents in the second to fifth decade of life. PMD has no sex or racial predilection, and it does not appear to be hereditary.

Patients with PMD typically present asymptomatically except with progressive visual deterioration despite spectacle correction due to the irregular astigmatism.
